Description
Autumn marks the transition from summer to winter, the duration of daylight becomes noticeably shorter and the temperatures start to cool down in September and October.
During a early fall season walk and drive through the countryside before the sun started to break down the early morning mist and fog, this photograph shows us a beautiful misty background to this single bale of hay.
When winter falls upon us, most bailing and field work will be completed with the farmers and ranchers having their hay and straw all ready for the cold spell.
A bundle of hay can come in many different shapes, sizes and forms and can be tightly wrapped and bound with binder twine, cords or hoops.
Hay can be grass, legumes or other herbaceous plants that have been cut, dried and stored for the use as animal fodder, particularly for grazing animals such as cattle, horses, goats, and sheep.
Hay is used as animal fodder when there is not enough pasture or rangeland for the animals to graze upon or when grazing is unavailable due to cold winter weather conditions or drought.
Poor quality hay is dry, bleached out and coarse-stemmed. Sometimes hay bales
stored outdoors will look dry or bleached on the outside, but will still be green inside the bale.
A dried, bleached or coarse bale is still edible and provides some nutritional value as long as it is dry and not mouldy, dusty or rotting inside.
Good quality hay is green and not too coarse, and includes plant heads and leaves as well as stems. This can be fresh grass/alfalfa hay which is a leguminous plant with clover like leaves and bluish flowers that is newly baled for an excellent fodder/food/feed. Other commonly used plants for hay can be mixtures of grass such as ryegrass, timothy, brome, bermuda grass or orchard grass.
(Please note: The "Watermark" will not appear on final prints of the photograph.
