Description
This photograph shows us a branch with Rowan Berries upon it.
Rowan berries are often called “rowanberries” and can be found in red or a light orange, yellowish or brownish in colour.
Rowan berries are small, acidic fruits that grow on rowan or mountain-ash shrubs or trees, giving them groups of berries in different sizes and leaf shapes.
One of the most commonly consumed species has the scientific name Sorbs Aucuparia, and belong to the rose family, Rosaceae which gives us dozens of different cultivars and species and colours.
Rowan berries are actually "pomes” that are berries as a single fruit. Pome trees produce a type of fruit produced by flowering plants with in the Malinae subfamily of the family Rosaceae. A pome is a fruit and can be consisting of a fleshy enlarged fruit with a core containing seeds with examples being apples or pears.
These trees and shrubs can be found in parts of North America and have been growing in parts of Newfoundland and Scandinavia for hundreds to thousands of years.
Although many of these shrubs and trees have an ornamental look for ones yard, the entire shrub/tree is very useful, including the bark, leaves and fruit. Although the fruit of a rowan plant (depending on the cultivar) can actually be toxic, but most of that toxicity can fade if heated or frozen over a long time. Rowan berries are often used in alcoholic liquids or liqueurs, as well as being commonly used in jellies and jams.
This tiny berry has high levels of antioxidants as well contains a nutritious value, which includes high levels of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and sorbic acid levels. Rowan berries also contain anthocyanin’s, tannins, polyphenolic and flavonols-rutin compounds.
Rowan-berries are also known to boost immunity, have antibacterial activity and have been known to aid in digestion.
