Description
This photograph shows us an old style radiator cap upon the top of a radiator, which sits at the front of an vintage automobile.
One could say that the Vintage Car Radiator Cap served basically three purposes.
The first one could be that it gave us a chance to have a very beautiful ornament, sitting up front on the top of the radiator which is used for the cooling of engine fluids inside combustion engines. Another being a visible indicator of how hot the engine cooling fluid was. Most old vintage radiator caps had clear gauges which provided a needle with information indicating how hot the coolant was. (As at this time, most vehicles did not have them with in the dash of the vehicle.)
With the third and possibly the most important reason for having a radiator cap of any style is to release some of the coolant from the radiator cooling system, when the pressure inside increases above the psi rating. This procedure is done with the use of a spring loaded valve that opens up with in the cap to release the pressurized coolant into the overflow tank or bag depending how old the vehicle is. Once the pressure has been reduced enough, the valve will close again.
After the engine has been off for a while and the system cools down and the coolant pressure drops, the radiator cap opens back up and allows the excess coolant that was in the overflow container to return to the radiator system. Another reason it’s important to release the pressurized coolant in such a manner is to prevent the crushing of any softer components like hoses being damaged from the external air pressure.
