Description
Along a low level creek, three male Mallard Ducks converse about life as the gentle water flows on by.
The mallard is a dabbling duck that pretty much breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas and is one of the most common ducks of the northern hemisphere. The mallard duck is the ancestor to most domestic ducks.
Although this photo does not show it clearly but the male ducks (drakes) are very colourful and have a dark green head with grey on their wings and belly region.
The females (hens) have mainly brown-speckled plumage.
Both have white collars-bordered with black or iridescent blue feathers called a speculum on their wings.
Mallards tend to live in wetlands, eat water plants and small animals. Mallards are very social animals preferring to congregate in groups or flocks.
The wingspan can be from 81-98 cm (32-39 in) with the their bill binging approximately 4,4 to 6.1 cm (1,7 to 2.4 in) long.
Mallard ducks are often slightly heavier than most of the dabbling ducks, weighing in at 0.72-1.58 kg (1.6-3.5 lb.)
(Please note: The "Watermark" will not appear on final prints of the photograph.)
