Description
During a summer walk through a local park and river area, I veered off the beaten path somewhat, and pleasantly stumbled across one of many small ponds filled with fallen trees, and an abundant growth of green Duckweed covering the surface of the water.
Duckweed is an aquatic plant that floats on top of still bodies of water or very slow moving ponds, creeks etc. it can be an important source of good quality food protein for waterfowl, and at the same time providing cover for a variety aquatic species, such as frogs and fish.
Duckweed and algae produce oxygen in the water, which is vital for all the aquatic creatures living in the pond, etc. It’s a very small tiny plant with little leaflets with roots and is commonly transferred from pond to pond by waterfowl.
